Standing on the bottom of the ocean freediving. No fins. No tank. One breath.
(Free diving. Apnea)
Last time I tried this; I just pulled down the rope, stood on the sand a couple of seconds and quickly pulled back up the rope.
This time I thought I’d hang about there a few seconds and take a look around. I loved the feeling of stillness, alone on the ocean floor, comfortable, relaxed. I smiled a little but not so much as to allow water in my mask.
I looked at my dive computer: 15.6m (making the bottom about 16m), 1 min 10 sec. I felt just fine standing there, with the soft sand between my toes and the fish welcoming me in their world, but I guessed I should go back up.
‘Let’s see if I can swim up’, I thought, ‘I can always grab the rope if I can’t make it all the way, but first of all let’s take a leap like a frog off the ocean floor.’
Boooing!… The the feeling was amazing: I nearly laughed and a few small bubbles squeezed out of my mask. As I went up, I tried the free diving swimming technique which I had mostly only practice swimming on the surface.
I felt how much more power it had and how many far I could move with each stroke. As I reached the last few meters I felt myself becoming buoyant and just let myself float to pop up to the surface… It’s my favourite free dive so far.
